You must meet eligibility requirements as a Design major and apply to be admitted into a Professional Studio Program for Apparel or Interior Design. 听The process is competitive!

When to Apply

If accepted, you will be admitted听for the following听term to begin courses the following academic year.听 For example, if you apply in spring 2025, you would be admitted to the studio program as of听summer 2025 and begin studio specific coursework in fall 2025.听 More details on timeline and courses below.

Dates for Spring 2026 will be posted in late fall 2025.听 Typically, winter finals week to early spring term.

Majors and GPA Criteria听

Admission is competitive, meeting or exceeding the Eligibility AID GPA or Competitive AID GPA does not guarantee admission to a Professional Studio Program.听 If you have two programs which are of interest to you, you may apply to a first and second choice. If you are accepted into both programs then you will be placed into your first choice听or, if you plan to pursue two, you can apply to two and potentially be accepted into both.听

AID GPA:听The AID GPA is your All-Inclusive Design听GPA. It consists of grades from all the Design Program Coursework including those taken at OSU and transfer institutions.

Eligibility AID GPA:听听To be eligible to apply to a major, students must have an AID that is equal to or higher than the Eligibility AID GPA.听

Competitive AID GPA:听This is the minimum AID GPA needed in order to be competitive when applying for a given major.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible to apply to a Professional Studio Program, you must:

  • be a current OSU Design major in Pre-Apparel Design and/or Pre-Interior Design (application must match declared program).
  • reach 90 credits by the end of the application term (junior standing).
  • have completed or are registered to complete in the current/application term the following courses:
    • DSGN 101 (will be waived for students declared as a pre-major by spring 2024 who apply and are admitted spring 2025 for the fall 2025 cohort)
    • DSGN 121
    • DSGN 244
    • DSGN 253 (completion of course is required prior to application)
    • DSGN 255
    • DSGN 281
    • Program specific classes
      • DSGN 226 (Apparel)
      • DSGN 287 & DSGN 288 (Interiors)
  • have an All-Inclusive Design (AID) GPA that is equal to or higher than the Eligibility AID GPA listed above for the major(s) for which you are applying.听 The AID GPA is the average of grades earned in the Design听Degree Program Coursework (both transfer and OSU grades) and grades of any additional design courses taken at OSU.听 If a class has been repeated, then refer to the听Retaking Courses Policy听to see which grade is used to compute the AID GPA.
  • have grades of C- or better in all Design Degree Program Coursework, which includes all lower-division Design Core, upper-division Design听Core, and major specific courses that are required to earn a specific design degree as well as all elective courses taken within the college curriculum (both transfer and OSU grades).
    • If you have a grade that is lower than a C- in听Design听Degree Program Coursework, you must be enrolled to retake this course听to be eligible to apply. Note: your AID in MyDegrees may no longer include the grade you are replacing听but it will be counted in your application.听 Please see a COB advisor for help calculating your GPA.
    • If you currently have an Incomplete with a D, D-, F, or N predicted grade, your grade must be updated to complete (with a C- or better) prior to the application deadline to be eligible听or听you must be enrolled to retake the course.

Application Details

  • Complete applications must be submitted by the deadline to the considered.
  • You can only submit one application per application period. 听If you resubmit your application in a given application period, the most recent submission will be used.
  • You can apply to both Apparel and Interiors on one application.
  • You will be asked if you agree to:
    • comply with the听COB Academic and Professional Standards听in combination with the cohort requirements below.
    • release your academic records to the College of Business major faculty reviewing your application.
  • Application supplements:
    • *Attachments: PDF format听only with a maximum file size of 5MB each.
      • Include your听name听(first and last) in the document file name.
      • Label the first page听of each听document with your听name and student ID number.听
      • Label and number each sample.
    • Transcripts: Send all transcripts with any Design coursework completed or in progress at other institutions before you apply. If the courses are not yet showing in MyDegrees, you must听upload unofficial transcripts听with the application.
  • Apparel Design specific requirements:
    • Four samples听of design work in one combined PDF file*:
      • DSGN 121听final project.听听If you took an approved DSGN 121 equivalent at another institution and did not have a听final project, please include an alternative class project.
      • DSGN 226 final project: Completed Denim Shorts Sewn Project including 4 images - front, back, inside out front, inside out back.听
      • Sewing sample: The sewing project should include pictures and a paragraph describing what the sample is, why you chose to sew听it, what you learned while working on the project, and details regarding your past sewing experience.
      • A project from any class or outside work of your own. Please include a few sentences about the project.
  • Interior Design specific requirements:
    • Essay question:听If you plan to pursue a major which has a competitive GPA listed in the chart above, you will be asked to address the following essay question:听Describe your overall career objectives and how completion of your selected major will help you achieve those objectives. 听Answers are limited 1000 characters and will be cut off if they exceed the limit. 听It is recommended that you compose your answers to the听essay in a separate Word document and copy and paste the responses into the application form.听Remember to check your grammar and spelling.
    • Resume in PDF format*
    • Five samples听of design work from Design courses (OSU or transfer) or equivalent art/design projects completed outside of class.听 Samples should be included in one combined PDF file*.

Cohort Requirements

Space in the Professional Studio Programs is limited.听 You will be notified of a decision during the term you apply.听听If accepted, you will be admitted听for the following听term.听 After admission:

  • NEW ADMITS:
    • You must register for the required fall听studio classes (listed below) by August 15. If you are unable to register (ex: account hold) for your required courses by August 15, please contact a COB advisor for assistance.听
    • If you are not registered or in contact with an advisor by August听15, your seat will be given to another student.听 As such, you will be unable to start your sequence the next term after admission and will need to reapply in the next application review.
    • If you are unable to complete the first term of coursework in your sequence, you will need to reapply in the next application review.听 This includes withdrawing from the course/s.
  • CONTINUING STUDENTS:
    • You must successfully complete all required studio-specific courses听listed below in the designated term after your admission.听 If you are unsuccessful in your attempt of a course listed below, please see a COB advisor immediately to discuss plans and a petition to continue in the program.
    • If you are unable to register for any course in your program listed below, you must petition to join a future cohort.听 Petitions for postponement are due in the term prior to return.听
      • If returning in fall, you must petition by the end of March to be included in fall priority registration in May.听
      • If returning winter or spring, you must apply two weeks prior to priority registration for the term.
